And you thought Paul McCartney’s appearance on the Colbert Report was cool.
Just days ago, the former Beatle officially became a part of this year’s Grammy lineup. Now the 66-year-old is scheduled to perform at his first US concert festival ever.
In addition to McCartney, nearly 130 more artists are slated to play at this spring’s Coachella event. Assuming she is able to make it into the country, Amy Winehouse is expected to make her first appearance on this side of the pond in three years. (Her recent Grammys performance was done via satellite.) Meanwhile, the other acts include The Killers, The Cure, Morrissey, Leonard Cohen, Public Enemy, The Tings Tings, My Bloody Valentine, Okkervil River, James Morrison, Lupe Fiasco, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Franz Ferdinand and Superchunk. Show Review: Okkervil River, The Bell House, January 6, 2009

Okkervil River played Brooklyn’s newest bar The Bell House on Tuesday. Playing to a sold out crowd, they played most songs from their last two outstanding albums The Stage Names and The Stage Ins.
Will Sheff and band were in fine form this night. Songs such as “Black Sheep Boy and “For Real” are blistering live. I love the pairing of these two songs which is how it also appears on their album Black Sheep Boy. “Black Sheep Boy” starts off with just Will and guitar, but then it goes into “For Real” which is dark, loud, and wonderful.
The scariest moment might have been a drunken fan that barreled through the front of the stage and started dancing wildly. Thankfully, he was taken away by security after one song. It was a bit of a frightening moment in otherwise a fantastic show.

The Best Music of 2008

Which albums, songs or shows had you raving in 2008? Find out what our Kellsee Chu chose as this year’s best:
Best Albums
1. Bon Iver - For Emma, Forever Ago: Bon Iver is Justin Vernon who recorded this album out in the remote Wisconsin cabin where he lived for 3 months. The result is this gorgeous album filled with songs about lost and love. If being isolated in a cabin in Wisconsin can produce music like this, I’m all for him going back there permanently. Bonus points to Vernon for his beautiful cover of Okkervil River’s “Blue Tulip.”
2. Ra Ra Riot - The Rhumb Line: Their drummer John Pike died last year in a drowning accident, but this band decided to go on and it was the right decision. It’s an album full of catchy tunes. “Can You Tell” and “Dying is Fine” are excellent.
