Michael Jackson Wins Four American Music Awards
The late Michael Jackson was honored with four American Music Awards (AMAs) last night. In addition to wins for Favorite Soul/ R&B Artist and Favorite Pop/Rock Male Vocalist, the singer won Favorite Pop/Rock Album and Favorite Soul/R&B Album for his Number Ones compilation.
Jermaine Jackson, who accepted the prizes on his brother’s behalf, paid tribute to Michael while praising his life philosophy.
Wearing a single white glove in tribute to Michael, Jermaine said: “It’s not just about the winnings, the awards. It’s mainly the message. The message Michael had will live on forever. He saw good in everyone. Start with love and let’s love each other.”
Michael’s wins took him to a record-breaking total of 23 AMAs for his career, however, he failed to win Artist of the Year, the only other category he was nominated in. That honor went instead to “Love Story” singer Taylor Swift, who was amazed to be handed five accolades, including Favorite Pop/Rock Female Artist, Favorite Adult-Contemporary Artist, Favorite Country Album (Fearless) and Favorite Country Female Artist.
“To even be mentioned in a category with Michael Jackson is an unimaginable honor. I’m sending my love to the Jackson family,” Swift said via satellite while accepting the Artist of the Year award.
The Black Eyed Peas - who were named Favorite Soul/ R&B Group and Favorite Pop/Rock Group - wowed the audience at Los Angeles’ Nokia Theatre with a rendition of their hits “I Got A Feeling” and “Boom Boom Pow.” Meanwhile, Janet Jackson had opened the show with a medley of her greatest hits.
Other performers included Whitney Houston, Lady Gaga, Alicia Keys and Jay-Z, and Jennifer Lopez, who fell midway through her tricky dance routine.
