Was Adam Lambert Ineligible for American Idol?

Hi Fi records is planning to release an album full of Adam Lambert’s songs that were recorded before he was ever on reality TV…but, there are several problems with the whole thing. It all started when Hi Fi made their intentions known. Lambert then responded, via the press, that these are not actually his songs but mere studio recordings which no longer reflect where he is musically - he contents they were meant to be demos for other singers.
The record company responded with a memo that suggests Lambert had a hand in writing most of the songs. Lambert promptly changed his tune (pun intended) at this point, saying the demos were indeed his…but, he doesn’t want them to be released.
Read More Despite this, Hi Fi isn’t done by a long shot. Now the company is alleging that Lambert was actually signed with them in February 2008 - before Adam ever auditioned for American Idol. This sheds a whole new light on Lambert’s status at the time of his Idol audition. If he was released from the contract at the time, fine. If he wasn’t…well, somebody (and probably a lot of somebodies) could easily end up in court. You see, singers who are signed can’t participate in American Idol. That’s against the rules, against the premise and against everything the show stands for - making money off the talent they “discover.” If Hi Fi can produce the contract, it certainly puts a whole new spin on the status of Lambert’s musical career. Would be nice if you got your facts straight before you blogged about this ####. Adam’s first statement was about “Want” and other songs like it, songs that he didn’t write, but was hired as a studio singer to promote. Once the full list of songs was put out on the net, he made the second statement…No changing of tune…just a clarification.
“Last Friday I was surprised to find out that songs I recorded back in 2005 were being released. Since then I discovered the entire track listing, revealed online today. I was shocked to learn that songwriting demos of songs that I co-wrote and recorded over the past few years may be released in an album. Like a rough draft that a writer does before finishing a book, I did not intend my work on these demos to be heard by the public. I was unaware that anyone intended to release these recordings until I heard about it in the press, and I’m very disappointed by this entire situation.”
Several of the old songs being released on this blatant money grab by Hi-Fi have been out on YouTube for ages now. Just stop and be rational for a moment. If the company really had “planned to release these all along,” and they’ve had them for a couple of years, why now? Could it possibly be because Adam’s suddenly famous and they’re seeing dollar signs?...You betcha.
John Hecker, CEO of Hi Fi said before that Hi Fi just bought the songs from Wilshire Records. “Hecker said Wilshire Records approached Hi Fi Recordings about releasing the material earlier this year when Lambert was gaining success on the show.”
As far as a contract- an agreement to record was made between Adam and Wilshire, no one is disputing that. But Wilshire is not a record company and the agreement was not a record deal.
Anyway, what is American Idol going to do? Kick Adam off the tour? Break his new contract with 19E RCA? I HIGHLY doubt any of those things will happen because Adam will be making them lots of money. And really to be honest, since when has AI about “making money off the talent they “discover.” ? Many of the past Idols have had material that has already been recorded, Kris Allen has a EP called “Brand New Shoes”, David Cook had a CD “Analog Heart” that came out before Idol was even over! Every year the same things are said and American Idol still is one of the highest rated shows.
